Crutches

When we are children, we all think that crutches are fun and exciting, but for those who actually need them after breaking a bone, being on crutches is not nearly the joy that little kids tend to imagine. Using crutches is not necessarily easy, and it certainly isn’t a natural feeling for most individuals who end up on crutches. Walking with crutches can actually be quite difficult, especially if you can’t seem to get the right size or adjust them properly. If it is really so difficult, how do you use crutches to help you heal from an injury?

Crutches should fit comfortably under your arms in a fully upright position when you lean over slightly at the waist and let your weight rest on them. If you have to adjust your position to make them comfortable or move them into a slanted position, then they are the wrong size. Take a look at underarm crutch pictures online to get an idea of the proper posture to use with the walking aids. Make sure the crutches in the pictures are underarm crutches and not another kind.

Usually, when you see a cast, crutches aren’t far behind. The combination of the crutches and cast allow for the bone to grow back together without shifting or placing pressure on the affected area. Without such assistance, your leg could easily buckle, causing you to fall and crack your skull, and crutches would not be able to help repair that injury.

Of course, broken bones are not the only reason for needing pairs of crutches. Some people are on crutches because they have chronic ailments that affect how they walk. For example, if you wear leg braces, crutches may be needed from time to time to help you along, especially when you are feeling particularly weak or if you have to take the braces off for a period of time.

Wooden crutches are the most common, though metal crutches are available. If you are concerned with the cost of buying them, check for crutches on eBay, where people are constantly trying to sell things they no longer need and recover some of their expenses. For crutches, eBay is a great source because almost all of them should be good as new, and since you never know what might happen to you in the future, it could be good to have a couple of pairs of crutches lying around the house.
